MERRY CHRISTMAS – Photography Posing Tips for Parents

HOHOHO, it’s just a few more weeks to Christmas! How’s your preparation for the Holidays? Apart from all the festive celebrations, this is also the best time to capture your child a midst all the beautiful decorations. Oh but children would hardly stand still long enough for you to press the shutter.

I have some tips to help you take that perfect Christmas photos during the coming holidays.

Tips for a Great Christmas Photoshoot

1. Santa Hat/Headbands. How to dress your baby up as a Christmas baby? Chubby babies under 1 years old wearing diapers are the cutest! Have the baby lying down beside a snowman or reindeer, wearing only his diapers and a Christmas hat. CUTE! Children over the age of 1 can be dressed in red, with some white or a green accessory, a Christmas hat, reindeer headband or scarf to easily bring out the Christmas atmosphere.

2. Christmas Tree. What is Christmas without a Christmas Tree? Just put a Christmas tree at home, decorate it with some Christmas lighting, and put some gifts below the tree and you have a perfect backdrop for photo shoot.

3. Lighting for Photoshoot. Christmas tree and decorations lit up the night. While they are good subjects for photography, having your child or someone stands in front of them for photo shoot is not ideal due to backlight. The background is lighted up nicely but the person’s face is often to dark. There is no need to stand right behind the Christmas decorations to take a picture. Instead, move closer to the camera, facing a light source (could be a window, lighting from a street lamp, etc). Have the Christmas tree/decorations in the background.

4. Cheese! You have the props, the background and the correct outfit. Now, you need that perfect smile. The toughest one would be getting the attention for a one-year-old. Shake anything that makes sound in front of the camera. It will at least have the infant looking at the right direction. For older children, a good method to capture their natural smile is to give them a sense of “mystery/excitement”. “Baby, I am going to give you a…….” the next moment, the child will be gleaming with excitement and anticipation for you to finish your sentence. This is the perfect time to click on the shutter.

5. Be Natural. Many of us are conditioned to look straight at the camera when taking photos. Some of the best photos were taken when the subjects were interacting and not looking at the camera. Snap that photo when the child is playing with daddy or mummy, when they are looking into each other’s eyes.

Photos for All Occasions

We are now in the digital era where it is so common to take a photo or a video. It wasn’t the same during our time when it was expensive to buy a roll of film and have to wait for a week to develop the photos. Just snap. Take photos on all occasions. Videos would be even greater. Include family members and friends in the photos. These will become precious memories for you and your child in the years to come.

Merry Christmas to Al
